SEMANTICS?
semantics is the study of meaning, it can be applied to entire text or to single words. semantics is the study of the relationship between words and how we draw the meaning from those words cause sometimes people can absolutely interpret different meaning from those words. that's why this study is exist
WHAT IS SEMANTICS STUDIED?
🍃 How meaning works in language
The study of semantics looks at how meaning works in language, and because of this it often
uses native speaker intuitions about the meaning of words and phrases to base research on. We
all understand semantics already on a subconscious level, it’s how we understand each other
when we speak.
🍃 how the way in which words are put together create meanings
One of the things that Semantics looks at, and is based on, is how the meaning of speech is not just derived from the meanings of the individual words all put together.
🍃 the relationship between words
Semantics also looks at the ways in which the meanings of words can be related to each other.
Here are a few of the ways in which words can be semantically related:
Synonymy – Words are synonymous/ synonyms when they can be used to mean the same thing
for example : Begin - Start
Big - Large
Youth - Adolescent.
Antonymy – Words are antonyms of one another when they have opposite meanings.
for example : Big - Small
Come - Go
Up - Down.
Polysemy – A word is polysemous when it has two or more related meanings. In this case the
word takes one form but can be used to mean two different things. In the case of polysemy,
these two meanings must be related in some way, and not be two completely unrelated
meanings of the word.
for example : Bright (shining) - Bright (intelligent)
Mouse (animal) - Mouse (computer hardware)
Homophony – Homophony is similar to polysemy in that it refers to a single form of word with
two meanings, however a word is a homophone when the two meanings are entirely unrelated.
for example : Bat (flying mammal) - Bat (sports equipment)
Pen (writing instrument) - Pen (small cage)
🍃 the relationship between sentence
Sentences can also be semantically related to one-another in a few different
ways.
Paraphrase
– Paraphrases have the same truth conditions; if one is true, the other
must also be true.
for example : The boys like the girls - the girls are liked by the boys
John gave the book to Chris - John gave Chris the book
Mutual
entailment – Each sentence must be true for the other to be true.
for example : John is married to Rachel - Rachel is John’s wife
Chris is a man - Chris is human
Asymmetrical entailment – Only one of the sentences must be true for the other to be true, but that sentence may be true without the other sentence necessarily having to be true.
for example : Rachel is John’s wife - Jhon is married
(but John is married does not entail Rachel being his wife)
Rachel has two brothers - Rachel is not an only child
but Rachel not being an only child does not entail Rachel having two brothers
Contradiction
– Sentences contradict each other when one sentence is true and the other
cannot be true.
for example : Rachel is an only child - Rachel’s brother is called Phil
( rachel is an only child, so why her has a brother called phill?)
Alex is alive - Alex died last week
( alex is alive but he died last week, how come alex is still alive while he was died)
Ambiguity - A sentence is ambiguous when it has two or more possible meanings.
for example : The chicken is ready to eat
(it could be means that the chicken is hungry, so it's ready to eat. or it could be means that the chicken is ready to be served and ate by someone)
HOW IMPORTANT TO STUDY SEMANTICS
hello guys, semantics is important to study to avoid misunderstanding and misinterpret when we talk to someone. we do communication everyday, we do communication to everyone. what if you misunderstand to someone, or someone misunderstand to you. you both might get hurts.

So, this construction is probably not equivalent but it is one in which the two adjectives can be used in one sentence separated by one word.

Well.. every branch of linguistics is important.
Semantics is critical to a language because without it, there would be no real structure to a language. Without the basic, intrinsic understanding of semantics that comes along with language acquisition, speakers could string words together in any order they wanted, and listeners would have a very hard time deriving meaning from those sentences. Semantics provides speakers a structure to use when they need to slot words into sentences, creating meaning.
